Many moons ago when I was a little girl, I would receive beautiful gifts from Africa courtesy of my uncle. They were necklaces made of shells, hippo and giraffe sculptures made of wood. I had the most original jewelery and toys one could imagine. You see, my father's youngest brother Hubert would travel to Africa to work in what seemed to me to be the furthest place on earth.
Our journey to this far, far away place began with a 10 hour flight, a 2 am departure from Singapore followed by another 2 hour air excursion and a 30 minute drive to arrive in Umhlanga near Durban. Not too bad for our hop over another big pond to our second continent. However, when one travels for this long and reaches a new time zone, nothing makes sense
Renting a car gave us much freedom and independence. Our first mission was to find a restaurant to keep the boys' bellies well fed and their minds sharp and alert. Awake was good enough...watch out for the walls boys! After lunch, paying our bill and one more time, figuring out the exchange rate, we soon realized what a deal it was to eat. One personal pizza and a GREAT glass of wine: $5.00
In South Africa, rice fields are replaced by vineyards, the food is great, the people are friendly. We had reached the "septième ciel"...heaven!
