The River Kwai
My boys are "old war movie" fans, but then again so are their parents. One of our favourite is "The Bridge Over The River Kwai". This small adventure on THE featured river would prove to be memorable. One of our tour's excursions was to stay one night at a most exotic and tranquil setting on a floating hotel at the edge of the River Kwai. We would later walk on the famous bridge replica.
Getting there was a riot and it was all on a fast banana boat. I have now become a speed demon and actually ask for this newly found velocity, well at least medium speed. I can't help it, I am traveling with 3 BOYS, it rubs off!
The floating accommodation on the river has no electricity, no phones, no windows (yes nets over the beds that I promptly fixed with good duct tape - thanks for the idea Gregoire!)
All night, we were serenaded by the sound of the rushing river, tree frogs and later, by very early morning birds . Roosters wake up at 3:45 AM in Asia!
The best part of this floating hotel (according to the boys) was that we could walk to the end of the platform, toss ourselves effortlessly in the river. We rode the furious current and quickly grabbed a rope at the end of the line to climb back on to our deck. I did shy away at first from throwing myself in the rushing cold body of water; thoughts of parasites did dance in my head. I finally took the plunge and had a great time.
After much begging and cute brown and blue eyed looks from my boys, I agreed to let them have a foot massage by candle light ($2.00) before dinner. After this great comfort, during our meal, the waiter explained that elephants visit this site every morning to bathe and drink in the river. I could feel that my sleeping pattern would be often interrupted as I would not want to sleep in and miss the elephants. But then again, how does one miss seeing elephants?

Village school
. The entire platform was adorned by the prettiest floral arrangements made mostly of orchids one would never see in Canada. All night, we were serenaded by the sound of the rushing river, tree frogs and later, by very early morning birds . Roosters wake up at 3:45 AM in Asia!
