Bangkok - first morning - day 1 of our Tour
Hot and humid; even worst than Ottawa! Littered, gray..no, hasn't changed since last night.
We are touring the canals today. Years ago, one of the kings of Thailand visited Venice, loved it and decided to have canals dug out all around Bangkok. We enjoyed our thrilling tour. First, we boarded a large water bus on which we had approximately 20 seconds to enter and find a seat. As the canal narrowed, we then transferred to a long nosed, smaller craft with enough room for 6. The third floating device was a smaller "wet and wild canoe" which flew and bounced over the water.
The boys could not get enough of the speed and were calling for more
We visited our first Temple (out of the approximate 50,000); a great spiritual experience for all. In front of a 20 foot high Buddha, our youngest played a game of luck where sticks are rattled in a container to allow one to fall to the ground. The fallen stick has a number which corresponds to a fortune. His fortune described his character so well and was a good reminder of all the advice and encouragement we try to give him; especially the part about not worrying so much and listening to his elders!!!
We quickly found out that we had a great traveling group; a family of 5 from England, a family of three from Norway, a very low key, patient and extremely helpful leader and a sweet guide. Lesson #2: good plan to join a tour for our first weeks in South East Asia.

Canal-Bangkok
. Ty well, he was simply Bond...JAMES Bond. I, on the other hand, was doing a quick bacterial count and trying to catch the hats, hide the camera, the kids or anything from the splashing water. Many Thai families live in pillared huts perched above the water. They bathe in this water, wash their dishes in it, use it for cooking and also use it as their sewer system. canals
You mean those canals aren't natural? Who knew? Just the whim of an Ultimate Ruler. Can't get away with that stuff these days...
I note youngest son is sans hat in the one picture - but there also doesn't seem to be much sun, either. Too much wet in the air, perhaps?
