Napier--Day 4 of Holiday

We drove to Napier today from Lake Waikeramoana which is a couple hour drive. We were happy to be back in civilization as the past couple of days we had been out in the boonies--places with no internet, barely a little country store... We hit a couple of wineries on the way here (the area around Napier is famous for wineries). The first winery we went to was call Esk Valley Winery, which did a good rose. The second winery we stopped at was Crab Farm Winery. We both enjoyed their sauvignon blanc. They had some deli supplies for sale and a nice patio to eat lunch on. So we took advantage of that and had a lunch of bread, cheese and tomatoes.
After verifying that Aron knew where we were going and standing in line at the wrong hotel for several minutes, we went to the correct hotel--The Beachfront Hotel which is on the main drag in Napier about 100 meters from the ocean. The hotel is really nice (as it should be for $NZ 160 a night). The room is huge and has a lounge area, a small kitchen, and best of all a huge spa tub!
We decided pretty quickly that we liked Napier. It's a pretty little town of about 50,000 people right on the ocean mostly in Art Deco style as there was a large earthquake here in 1931 that knocked over the city and it was rebuilt in Art Deco. There are numerous pretty parks and gardens. We enjoyed visiting several of them and also going to the overlook. We enjoyed eating dinner at a Thai restaurant near the visitor information center on Marine Parade. They did a wonderful Massuman curry and basil prawn stir fry. The evening was spent in the nice big spa tub. More thumbnails ...
