Christmas!

I like shiny, sparkly, happy things. Among these things are waterfalls, fireworks, butterflies, sparkly jewelry, and Christmas lights. While New Zealand doesn't have the massive displays of Christmas lights that are seen in the US, we found a suburb (the Lower Hutt) that seems to have a few nice display of lights (entered in a Christmas lights competition and shown on a map). So mom I miss driving around looking at lights at home but at least we got to see a few here.
The weather here is similar to what it would be at home on Christmas (winter in California). It's rainy and probably in the 60's. We aren't too upset about the weather today as we just have plans to relax and cook Spanish food--tortilla de potata, fish croquettas, salad and sangria. We just hope the weather will cooperate when we head north on Thursday for a few days holiday.
When we are at the Christmas carol singalong in the Basin Reserve last weekend, somebody was handing out cards advertising a Christmas Eve service in the Town Hall. So we decided to go. It started about 9:30PM and we discovered that it was the service that was being filmed live to show to the nation on Christmas Day. So despite having a bit of a manufactured feel, we enjoyed it. There was lots of singing--a great Pacific Islander choir, a childrens' group, a famous Opera guy, and even the audience joined in for several songs, They had a dance group performing a couple of routines, some Christmas readings, clips of cute little kids saying what Christmas means to them and even a live artist painting a Christmas picture. It was all held in the beautiful old town hall (see video clips).
