This stately national mosque, Southeast Asia's largest, is positioned on the northeast corner of Merdeka Square. About 90 percent of the Indonesian people are Muslims. Amplified chanting from the Istiqlal minaret, echoed by the hundreds of other smaller mosques throughout the city, call Jakarta's Muslims to prayer five times a day.
