On our way to Taupo we heard on the radio that the New Zealand International Iron Man event was on today, so expect delays. We arrived in town to see loads of men and women on bikes or running. The iron man even starts with a 3.9km swim in the lake, a 179km cycle ride followed by a 42.5km run, a full marathon. The event was really well organised and we wereonly delayed for 5 mins, getting to where we wanted to go, which is a major delay here !
Our visit in Taupo was to go and see Taupo Bungy, we found it easily and went to take a look. OMG how was it !! 53 metres above the Waikiki River, what a place. But, no, I didn';t jump this time, on doctors orders, and the Bungy people agreed I shouldn't, but I was close !! When my hernia has been sorted out, we are both going to do it, No worries !! It would be fantastic on a clear sunny day. We watched 4 go over, looked 'well good', 'awesome'
We headed out of town, past the Iron man finishing area in the park, Thousands of entrants, loads of bikes parked up, and the 15km's or so out of town was lined with people cheering on the runners. We saw a sign going out of town which was the 30km marker, and then they had to turn all the way back to town, this was at about 5:00 and the event had started at 07:00. And the stragglera hadn't even started the run yet !
I've put my name down for it next year !!!!
Unfortunately the weather was still bad so we didn't get to see much of a view of Lake Taupo, but the drive beside the lake was a great road, and probably very picturesque when sunny.
Once out of town we went out of the mountains and into a bleak are called the Rangipo Desert, just like Saddle worth moors, on the way to Ohakune.
