Since I have been in country we have stayed in a island resort and leisure park and have yet to experience the real PC. Saturday though we will all be dispersing to our host families for the next 2.5 months. I'm a bit nervous, but from what I have learned the Filipinos are very nice and will want to treat us as guests and not a part of the family which the PC wants us to be. I'm excited to learn how to do my laundry, cook and the various other things I lack due to living in the states.
I am located in the northern Luzon area and will be learning a language called ilokano, today we had a brief intro and it seems a bit difficult, but I have hope of at least being able to say hello how are you and goodbye before the host family stay. I've also been told that 8 million people speak the language and it is even spoken in some parts of Hawii and California. News to me.
After the training I will be working in water and sanitation in the region supposedly living in a comparable area (to that where I will be for training, I think it is very rural). I have also found out that I will work for a government unit in the wat/san area and probably travel to different communities to help. From what I hear I will probably also have electricity (most of the time) and running water. We will see about that, I am not gonna expect anything (PC motto). There are huge mountains on all sides of the village were are currently in, so this is very different from what I had envisioned with my nipa hut on the beach. Also I have heard that previous PCVs have bought horses- so that would be pretty sweet. So mom and dad I want a horse for Xmas! I also heard they aren't that expensive...really. We will see though. Rice is huge in this area. and I have been told it is served with fish for almost all meals. Yipee. I miss you all!
