During my mom's Gap Year, way back when, her parents joined her for a trip to Venice. So I had to smile, as we had come full circle - my mom, Raph and I bobbing our way into Venice.

After an amazing lunch- Raph and I more than enjoyed a glass of good wine instead of our usual 1 Euro wine- we dutifully made our way straight to the San Marco Place. We had full intentions of joining a walking tour, but got confused by all the umbrellaed tourgides, missed our tour and decided to go eat ice cream instead. A visit to the Basilica and the belltower later, we felt our tourist duties for the day had been fulfilled and settled down in a restaurant with a bottle of Prosecco. The night was topped off with an impressive Vivaldi concert and a walk along the canals. (This resulted in a very enchanted Claudia, uuuuhing and ahhhing at every bridge we crossed, much to the annoyance of Raph and my mom)

The following day, we caved. For the first time on Gap Year, Raph and I were a part of... that group. The retarded tourists following the umbrellas with audiodevices stuck into their one ear. Yet the sacrifice was worth it, as we acquired more knowledge, which broadened our mind (and so on) annnnnd we got another free tour out of it! So as not to pass up on something free (an absolute Gap Year no-go) we all piled into a boat and drove to Murano island. My mind refused to comprehend the skill of the glassblower, as he made a horse in about 5 seconds. Of course, it being a free tour, we were then subjected to a lot of advertising and 'encouraged' to buy merchandise at the showroom.

We just made it to shore at the right time, as a thunderstorm reached the city. We took refuge in a romantic little Italian restaurant and rather happily fell asleep after 1,5 litres of wine.

On our last morning, we found ourselves on a bench, having breakfast and just not wanting to leave. I guess that's the magic of Venice, no?

Eat, drink and be merry. You are only young for a very short time. Make the best of it because that is all going to change sooner than you think.

No way, the older the merrier!
