We obviously had to continue the tradition of celebrating into the birthday, regardless of 8 o'clock shifts the next morning. So fresh (and slightly...fragrant) out of our workclothes, we paid a visit a visit to the Road King, together with a fellow waitress.
When the Road King ( a harley davidson biker bar - yes, that does exist in our one-streeted dorpie) played Florence and the Machine and the british barman in flame decorated lederhosen turned up a happy birthday song, we decided: tis gonna be a good night. Our suspicions were confirmed when we were introduced to austria's favorite drinking game: nageln.
Needless to say, both of us were hopeless and I lost. Twice.
Having given up on our carpenting skills, we headed to the club. The birthday gods were on top form and the DJ even played some dubstep. And so we danced into Raph's birthday. (I use the term 'dance' loosely, some might say 'moving like you've been ubducted by aliens').
After 3 hours of sleep, I crawled to my 8 o'clock shift, leaving the birthday girl to sleep (only occainsionally woken up by loving phonecalls from back home at 6.40am). When I got back from 4 hours of hell, birthday girl was just getting up. Perfect timing!
Off we went for birthday lunch/breakfast at an Alm. After 2 salads (no hotel gulash!!) it was time for presents!
A birthday back massage later and a relaxig night spent skyping with loved ones, Raph happily slept into her 19th year
In other news: the Africans have taken to skiing! While we might still look like baby giraffe's on two planks, we can now in fact get down a slope without a faceplant in the snow.
Do: go skiing in perfect Austrian winter weather high up in the mountains.
Do not: go skiing for 2 consecutive days, when your thigh and butt muscles aren't used to excessive use. (a butt cramp half-way down the slope is not fun! Take my word for it)
Do: use skiing as an excuse to eat. Rum and hot chocolate at the top for courage. Lunch half way down, because you need to have a break, right. And a coffee and ice-cream at the bottom, as a reward.
Do not: go skiing the day after it has rained and the slopes have been turned into sheer plates of ice. Not actually being able to actually steer your skies aint fun.
Happy birthday, Raph!
