We woke around 8am with the intention of having one final day in Luang Namtha to catch up on blogs and job application forms for New Zealand. But unsurprisingly we make the decision to pack up and head out on the midday bus to Huay Xai, the border crossing town to Thailand.

We calculated that it costs less to enter Thailand, have a couple of weeks in the north and then travel to southern Laos from Bangkok than to travel back through Laos on expensive transport.

A bit flustered we rushed to catch the bus, the journey taking 3.5 hours. We decided to stay in Huay Xai and enter Thailand early tomorrow morning so as not to waste a full day on our 15 day visa. We check in at Gateway Villa, which costs 100,000 kip, more than we would spend but it included breakfast.

Later we have an explore of the little border town. We go for a Mekong sunset beer at the Riverside Restaurant where you can see Thailand over the other side of the river. We at at Bar How? and have our first proper red curry infused with heaps of chilli before having an early night.

34 including $20 bus
