Busy couple of days here in Cape Town. We're enjoying ourselves so much that we've decided to extend our stay. Talking to several people there's really nothing to do in Jo'burg unless you're going to Kruger National Park. And since we're going on safari in Tanzania, we're going to skip Kruger, so we are skipping Jo'burg completely and staying in Cape Town until October 30.
We have lots of pictures to show but while our hotel has free internet access, they don't allow uploads (too much bandwidth). So you'll have to wait a little longer to get a view of Cape Town. For me, it is very similar to Rio in many ways. Both are big cities on the coast with good weather and a prominent mountain overlooking them that you can take a cable car to. Yesterday we went to the top of Table Mountain to get a view of the whole city. We had a delicious African tasting dinner in the evening complete with drum show (we were part of the show).
Today, more walking around the city and some shopping in the markets. I had warthog ribs for lunch. They were a bit tough -- this warthog must have given quite a chase. It was between warthog and zebra but we felt the zebra was too cute to eat. Tonight we eat at a restaurant that specializes in game so we may be having some other friendly zoo animal.... And the winning animals from the evening are: ostrich steak, gembok steak (oryx), crocodile ribs, warthog ribs, and springbok shank stew. All fantastic. I'm sure we'll have an even greater appreciation for these animals on safari having tasted them. :-)
Next up over the next few days, wine tasting, visiting the southern tip of Africa (Cape of Good Hope), and if we're lucky hugging an African Penguin.
