Day 9 - Cheetah Farm
Entry 55 of 73 | show all | print this entry |
Having growled and roared our best animal impressions at the previous night's campfire, it was only appropriate that this day would lead to our first encounter with African wildlife. Or, umm... sort of.
But first, like all mornings, we had to load up Ella, our touring home on wheels. Now some would say she wasn't the most comfortable vehicle on the road, but I didn't mind too much. As our driver, Walt, would proudly point out - she never broke down and that was definitely worth something. Besides, with a deck of cards and a few beers in the cooler I had plenty to get me through the days.
But enough on Ella, today we were heading to the Otijitotongwe Farm, which is anything but a normal farm. Forget about crops or cattle here - this place is for raising the fastest animals on the planet. This "farm" is for raising cheetahs! And was anticipation ever high within our group. It's just not every day you get to see these cats feast on dinner!

As you can tell, there was a lot of action to see. I've never witnessed anything like it. Such speed, grace and power! It all happened so fast. And what a chorus of sounds that came with it! Long whining hisses. A threatening growl. And the eventual thump of paws as they triumphantly chased down their meat. What an experience!
That evening we all settled around the camp fire and played a rousing game of 'Bottles and Tops'. All were high in spirits from the day's events. And what a day for celebrations. Not only did we see cheetahs, but it also happened to be the birthday for our Itailian friend, Ricky. Of course, a few had to be tipped back in his honor.
