A short one and half hour bus ride from Santiago on the Pacific coast are the harbor towns of Valparaiso and Vina de Mar. Valpo was once an old city of great shipping importance, but now is much more relaxed and simple. With steep coastal slopes directing you up winding roads, this place has a quaintness to it that I found very appealing. Once again, the summer would be a better time to visit, but even now it was not hard to envision folks slipping away from the bustle of Santiago to the colorful houses and inns that lined this cities narrow streets.

Vina de mar had some similar characteristics, but as the up-scaled community in the area, shopping and dining were more distinctly seen. With just a few hours in the town though, I'm sure there's more to this place than I saw. My highlight here was great though, for I had strangest beer ever - luke warm malt liquor with sugar and a blended raw egg! Good for the body they say and surprisingly not too bad. :)

In leaving the coast I had a desire to return and experience more. Apparently the little beach towns farther north are quite beautiful and much more relax to these busy and touristy towns. And that sounds just perfect - once the summer sun comes out!
