I decided to spend the night in Zakho since I was in no real rush and I thought it would be interesting to see this border town. However, shortly after checking into the hotel, I realized a major difference with Turkey and Syria which was the lesser amount of English that was spoken. As well, there was the fact that Kurdish is very different from either Turkish or Arabic.
As I wandered into town, I noticed many more women were wearing full black chadores and head scarves which was quite different from what I had seen in Syria or Turkey. In many ways, it reminded me of the more conservative Muslim city of Esfahan in Iran. It also felt that there was less openness from the people here compared to what I had experienced in Cizre. However, I was only around for one night so it is definitely not fair to judge this town based on such a short visit.
