All classic US railroad icons, for today was nothing but rail over the east to west railroad. Amtrak certainly isn't for people in a hurry, as freight gets precedence over passengers in this country where commerce is king. But it certainly is a great way to see the countryside.

The cornfields of Illinois and Iowa gradually morphed into the ranches of wester Nebraska, until we spied the rocky mountains, and the skyline of Denver. The rockies were drier than we had pictured, but the scenery was breathtaking, with switchbacks, tunnels, gorges, streams, trout fishermen and deer.

Landscape photography is difficult at the best of times, but from a train, with Toby's licks and fingermarks all over the windows, it was even more so.

As sleeper passengers, we were traveling first class, with free food. And while the free food was not necessarily first class, and the toilets broke, we can't fault this journey as a way to see 7 states in comfort. Our fellow passengers have been great too, including a preacher from South Carolina, a retired oral historian from Milwaukee, an injured boxer from Iowa, a software salesman from Illinois, hippies moving to San Francisco, and a retired fisherman from Alaska.
