We had never heard of Louisville before we started researching this trip. It is on the banks of the Ohio River, on the northern state line of Kentucky. Its original raison d'Ítre was the Ohio Falls, the first significant rapids between the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico, and the Upper Ohio River, which has it's source in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the falls, all the river freight had to be unloaded from its boat, and transferred to new boats upstream of the falls.

Louisville hit our itinerary because of its proximity to the bourbon area, but it is well known to most US sporting fans because of: the Louisville slugger baseball bat, the home of Muhammad Ali, and the Kentucky Derby.
The Louisville Slugger is used by over half of the major league baseball players, a wooden bat made from a single batten of either either white ash or maple. The factory tour was fantastic, even for three inexperienced baseball fans. After seeing how fast the 90mph fastballs felt, we didn't have a go in the hitting slot, but Toby did have a crack at tee ball.

The Muhammad Ali exhibition centre is on the river, and unfortunately we didn't have time because we had to get some shopping done.

But we did have time to squeeze in a quick pilgrimage to Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Long enough to admire the exhibit, place a bet, and watch the 360degree movie of the greatest 2.x minutes in sport. Back again tomorrow morning for the track tour!

Final event for our last night in The South was a search for some more pecan pie... This time a Derby pie, being pecan and chocolate. Yum. We've enjoyed the south, friendly people, fantastic climate but it has not been good fir the waist line!
