We visited the Library of Congress as well, including Thomas Jefferson's contribution of 6,500 books in 1815. With afternoon tea in the sculpture garden, and an early dinner at Clyde's (half price raw bar!) we were getting tired.
But we pushed on to Jefferson's memorial, another neoclassical monument overlooking the city.
The final encounter of the day was with Washington's fantastic metro system, it has to be the most spacious, convenient and architecturally consistent subway system in the world.
