After a big sleep we woke to see a few hot air balloons over Pidgeon Valley from our bedroom window. A beautiful day and a wonderful sight to wake up to. We enjoyed breakfast at our hotel which included a plate with cheese, olives, yoghurt, Nutella, luminous polony, slices of tomato and cucumber accompanied by a plate of fruit and a bread basket. They even did some scrambled and fried eggs for us.
We then packed up and caught our airport shuttle bus. After several stops to collect passengers we raced to the airport which was about an hour away. We ran into the airport with a mass of people all late for their flights. Fortunately the airline people didn't seem too fazed and we boarded and took off around 30 minutes late - shoo!
We arrived in Istanbul at around 14:30 after a very exhausting bus drive through mad traffic. Our hotel room was pretty average but it was fun to be in a different part of Sultanahmet this time.
It was time for lunch so we decided to walk towards the Spice Bazaar and stopped to grab some wraps (durums) on route. They turned out to be super delicious.
The Spice Bazaar has been set up in the old post office and is several streets of spices, Turkish delights of every variety and delicious dried fruits. We actually ended up walking through the bazaar and into the local shopping area. Wow, we think Friday is a weekend day here because the streets were packed with locals looking at everything from woolen jerseys to sexy lingerie! It was great fun to see the locals in action. We eventually wound our way back to the Spice bazaar and couldn't resist getting a bag of chocolate coated Turkish delights and nuts. We paid 10 Turkish lira (around R50) for the most delicious bag of heaven you've ever tasted. Was definitely the highlight for the day!
After a little nap and recouping time we headed out for dinner after 8 and after trawling through several very expensive tourist spots we found a cheaper option down a side street. The owner was kind and gave us a free mezze plate of yoghurt dip and tomato chilli dip. We then ordered a chicken shish and a roast beef dish. We whipped out the cards and had a few rounds of Rummy before calling it a night. Tomorrow we aim to catch a ferry on the Bosphorus and see what lines its banks. Our last day in Turkey...
