Well there are bus trips and then there are bus trips.

Who thought that getting out of Peru could be so much fun! Guide books suggested that the coast border between Peru and Ecuador could at times be a challenging affair. They also suggested that the 10 hour bus trip (it took 12) between Piura and Guayaquil could be open to interpretation in terms of reliability and general rowdiness of the customers.

This time the guide book got it spot on.

To kick things off and add to our anxiety, Peruvian security officials finger printed and then video taped each passenger as they entered the bus.  These steps simply added to the anxiety that we and one other tourist were feeling about the trip ahead.

While the borders ended up posing no greater threat than an endless bureaucratic line, the customers raised their game to add excitement, suspense and a new low level of manners to the trip.

Highlight of the journey was our departure from the city of Manchan where we had stopped for a short toilet break.  After 10 or so minutes the bus conductor deemed that time was up and even though one gentleman who was traveling with his wife and daughter was yet to return the bus began the final leg of its journey to Guayaquil.

Regardless of protestations from the wife and daughter that included screaming, hanging out the window screaming his name and standing in front of the bus, we departed and he was never to be seen again. All outstanding fun when you have front row seats.

Ecuador will now be our new home for a few weeks as we take in the Ecuadorian coast, the Galapagos Islands and finally head to the highlands of Quito for a spot of volcano trekking and mountain biking.
