Following a recommendation from people we met in Paraty, we decided to take a detour from our original itinerary.

We headed 600km west from Salvador to a town called Lencois, which is the base for exploring the Chapada Diamantina National Park.

We had an action packed 3 days in the most stunning landscapes (some parts reminded us of the Blue Mountains in Australia while there was also elements of a 'green Grand Canyon').

We visited some amazing waterfalls, did plenty of trekking, watched the sun set atop a mountain peak and snorkeled in caves.

We also did a day of technical mountain biking – a side of the sport we haven't tried before. The 35km ride was one of the most physically challenging and exhausting things we have ever done but thoroughly enjoyed it.

We were so glad to have made the detour to our original itinerary, and we have David and Jimena of Paraty way to thank for their suggestion.  Chapada Diamantina National Park was most definitely one of the highlights of our tip so far!
