Hadrian's Wall was a defensive fortification built around AD 122 on the command of Roman Emperor Hadrian marking the northern boundary of Roman Britain. Hadrian's Wall path runs 135km from Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway, although there is an amazing part of the original wall still intact at the highest point, most has been removed by the locals over the centuries to build homes, cathedrals etc.
We spent our 6 days walking an average of 25kms per day in the wind, rain with a bit of sun, passing farms and over styles, sharing paddocks with sheep and cows (some massive and angry!), along vallums, through ancient forests, visiting the ruins of Roman forts; and up and down escarpments where the best part of the wall is very much in tact
We ate wild blackberries, saw strange vole like creatures, a cow about to give birth, a nide of pheasants frantically trying to get away from us, alongside a gypsy camp where a couple of the lads were trying to saddle up a very sad looking horse, to name a few interesting sites.
We seemed to spend most of our time when not walking stopping in at the many tea houses to sample their yummy cakes, or finding a village pub where we would pig out on a huge meal and then feel sick for the rest of the day walking.
We stayed mainly on working farms in their bunkhouses, the quality of accommodation ranged from lovely fires with cosy beds, to damp dark rooms with uncomfortable mattresses, thankfully the former came out on top. Our most memorable night had to be our stay on a farm named Downton Abbey on the Wall by the locals, the owners were quintessentially old school posh and absolutely eccentric - we loved it and wanted to stay a night or 2 more!
We finished the walk in Carlisle, staying at an awesome hostel, newly opened, we were invited to their opening weekend party - let's just say, when you think it is a good idea to climb up Carlisle Castle, maybe its time to go to bed. We also found the coolest cocktail bar where the cocktails were awesome and stupidly cheap!!
With Hadrian's Wall now ticked off the bucket list, next stop is to meet up with the original Harrington Street Crew in Sheffield and then 2 weeks in London being a tourist for once!!
