‘Nubble’ is a small, rocky island just off the eastern point of Cape Neddick, York Maine. About two miles north, I was clearly attuned with the scent of the salty breeze from the York River and far behind was the site of the harbor inviting me to embrace the moment
An awesome sight on the top of a bare cliff was a spectacle, dramatically boasts of the lighthouse-keeper's red dwelling. Seated right next to it, just signaled the communion of both ‘strengths’ – telling me that there CAN NEVER BE a lighthouse without the lighthouse-keeper.
(yes, not the other way around) As I went closer, I heard the waves rejoiced it’s bienvenida – my heart leaped to comprehend that I was the only Asian there at THAT TIME , on touch base with her boldness, so sharp, so strong, and standing against the blue sky.
This completed my queue of poetry for indeed she sat between Cape ANN and Cape Elizabeth, in a clear stunning weather and is every way so admirable. No wonder there was this ‘romantic’ attraction between me and The Nubble….so did the name articulated the connection.
I have travelled from ‘The Great Wall ‘ to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ where temples take pride of their highest recognitions and their intricate art which somehow just seem to me an adage.
This trip was different
I changed the course of my steps and looked behind me, with a sweet smile, I started composing a metaphor to THE ONE I LOVE SO MUCH that I was looking at, at that moment ~ who brought me there and all I can say was , ‘ I’m Safe…’ and yes I have always been. In Woolf’s masterpiece, she presented a lighthouse as a symbol of permanence and constancy.
Seeing the Nubble and looking at where I am now, I can deliberately say that I am with a steady light that never ceases to shine. ‘Mrs. Ramsay’ the celebrated character in the novel emphasized that ‘ a lighthouse is a derivative symbol, representing the ability to emit energy and influence around you.’ And she was right. It may be a puzzle for us to picture out how much difficulties were faced by the seamen before all these navigational aids came to be. How rare are the skills of a sole lighthouse-keeper to remain in sight of the land with his trained eye, spotting the changes of the waves along the hidden rocks
Not only the stars can provide directions, and while Cape Neddick Lighthouse stands on Nubble Island about 100 yards off The Point in the village of York Beach ~ travellers can avoid dangers. No rugged coastlines nor submerged reefs can ruin her guidance….it has stood since time immemorial and this will become Maine’s sea mark both day and night. As we walked away to continue our New England trip, I found serenity and calmness.
Impressed byCAPE NEDDICK, I tuned in to an inner calling inside me. “ LIFE STANDS STILL HERE” taking the echo close to my heart and carrying out across all time and space, I continued my journey with hidden tears down my cheeks…and with distance NOW ~ I can only hope that ‘my lighthouse- keeper’ will help me find my way back HOME and all THOSE moments shall someday soon become permanent, true and real.
