I did some serious snuggling with my bus date, Caitlin...watched Schindler's List... brushed my teeth in a public bathroom... slept on the floor of a ferry on the "Bla" Deck... arrived in Cottbus 5 hours earlier than expected and was thankful that mine was one of the few host families that were able to pick up their students early!
Last night I ate dinner with my new host mom and dad, Annelise and Manfred, and new host Grandmother. None of them speak any English so we spent the entire dinner typing our conversation on http://www.freetranslation.com/. It was quite hilarious. My host grandmother loves me and woke up early to bake two breakfast pastries for me!
Today was a host family day (which I was so thankful to have!). My host mom works for Vattenfall and was able to get me and a few other students a tour of their wind energy plant and coal mining plant. I'm not going to lie, it was so completely awesome. We were standing on the edge of a huge pit of coal...literally earth 15 hundred years old... then we walked in it... We were like little kids running around in the back yard!
We were also able to see the largest machine in the world. It is at the coal mining field in Cottbus and I don't remember how many meters/kilometers/whatever long it is, but it is HUMONGOUS! It was like looking at a metal city. None of the pictures I took even come close to showing how huge this thing was. It is used to take the coal out of the earth and sent it to a train to be burned for energy.
After this we were all taken to an amusement park and out host families paid for us to ride to the top of this "mountain" and "slide" (in a metal car) the way down. I was a little nervous...but in the end it was so fun.
Tonight we had a great dinner at my family's house and I am ready to get a great nights rest for our 4 event/show days in this city!
