Sitting in the Montbello Recreation Center, waiting for our host families to arrive was so nerve wracking for me! My heart was pounding when we were told that our families were on the other side of the wall and in a moment we were going to be allowed to go meet them!! My roomie for the next three weeks is Kristine from Norway. We met eachother about ten minutes before we met our family so everything was completely brand new for me.
The way UWP has it set up to meet our families is pretty cool. We were each given a card that had our families name, address, phone number, whether they had animals, our roomies name, and our host code. The code is a way to identify our family when we are let in the room. Mine and Kristine's for this family was "Acrobat". Our family could dress like this, have a drawing, or bring a prop to identify themselves. Kristine and I found eachother in the middle of the room and had to search for our family together.
The Corby's were standing in the back of the room holding a sign with a picture of an acrobat. They were smiling and so happy that it was easy to fall in love with them instantly. There were big hugs all around.
They live outside of Denver, in town named Aurora, so there was a little bit of a drive but it was nice because it gave us time to get to know eachother. In the family there are four children: Kyler, Kari, Kinsie, and Kipp. Kinsie's birthday had been the day before so when we got home we had cake and ice cream. Kyler is in Kenya on a mission trip so we won't meet her until our last week here. The family chose to host us for an extra week so that we will be able to meet her. I'm pretty stoked to see her pictures of Africa and hear about her experience.
The family was so sweet. They had balloons on our pillows for us. Kristine and I are sharing a room for the next three weeks. We stayed up late the first night talking and laughing. We get along very well.
Also the family has a black kitty that looks just like my Houdini. We were told that the cat (Noelle) doesn't really like people but within minutes of us being at the house, Noelle was sleeping on my bed. She's slept, snuggled up to me ever since. I might have to pack her in my suitcase.
