Just been listening to Steamboat Willie playing that song and it sums up how I feel about New Orleans already and we've only been here a few hours.

First back track – last night we wandered along the boardwalk and found the Carlyle Café – only one of a host. We weren’t particularly hungry so had a crab and shrimp salad – mmmm delish.  We then wandered back along to our hotel stopping for a Haagen Daaz on the way.

So this morning up bright and early and off to Miami airport just after 7.30am.  It’s a beautiful big airport and because we were flying American Airlines which is part of One World we were able to access the Admiral’s Club – very pleasant.  The flight to New Orleans was about two hours and was pretty straightforward.  We had a shuttle bus to our hotel which dropped us off last so we were able to see a bit of the city as we dropped everyone else off at their hotels.  And so finally to Omni Royal Orleans – what a grand old lady – right in the heart of the French Quarter. Thank you Mark – you’ve done us proud yet again!  For those of you who don’t know – I have a wonderful travel agent – Jetset in Goondoon Street.  Mark Winter has been looking after our travel arrangements for a very long time now and he never fails to find us brilliant hotels in first class locations as well as creating itineraries which run as smooth as silk – thanks again Mark xx.

Anyway the interior of the hotel is so old world French – I’ll upload a few photos to try and give you an idea.  The staff are so helpful and friendly too.  So we basically dumped out suitcases and set off to explore.  We had lunch at Bubba Gumps with the railroad just over the way – and these trains make that lovely musical sound like you hear in the movies.  After lunch we wandered over the rail road to the edge of the Mississippi river and then along the street till we reached Jackson Square which is quite beautiful and then to the St Louis cathedral which overlooks the square.  We then immersed ourselves in the sights and sounds of the streets of the French Quarter.  I took so many photos – it is such a pretty and picturesque area.  We walked for miles, finding Bourbon Street on our travels – walked the length of it – this was around 4.30pm and the place was buzzing – heaven knows what it will be like tonight!  We passed a little paved park area with a bar and restaurant and an open air area in front where a band were playing so we went in and enjoyed a $5 cocktail and listened to the band for half an hour or so.  That was Steamboat Willie I mentioned above.  It’s now just after six and we’ve come back to the room to rest our aching feet for a wee while but first we explored the rooftop observation deck and checked out the rooftop pool - amazing views.
