So last night we went to see the Lion King. It lived up to everything I'd read about it – absolutely spectacular – when all the animals came on stage in the first scene – I had tears in my eyes – it was just breathtaking.  It’s such a lovely story – the typical good triumphs over evil in the end.  The singing was fabulous and some of the characters really funny.  And tomorrow night we’ve got Jersey Boys.

The rainy day in New York continued into a very rainy night and we actually had to wait about 15 – 20 minutes at our hotel to get a taxi to go to the theatre. We were a bit stunned at that since we’d commented several times on the proliferation of yellow cabs.  Anyway we got a cab eventually which cost us about $10 plus a couple of bucks for a tip.  When the show ended of course there were what seemed like a million and a half people all leaving the theatre at the same time and it was still raining heavily – and neither of us were dressed to cope with that.  However outside the theatre was a row of 'bike cabs’ – a bike with two seats behind (like a tricycle shape) and all covered in with plastic.  After looking around and not seeing any free cabs in the vicinity we asked one of them if he could take us to our hotel.  So we set off on a somewhat scary journey – New York traffic swirling around – it’s dark and raining and we’re on the back of a bike!  Anyway he got us back to the hotel and I’m thinking to myself that we’ll need to give him a decent tip after pedalling the two of us home in the rain.  I asked how much – to be honest I hadn’t given the cost a thought – thinking maybe around $20 – he then whipped out this laminated card showing how the charges were worked out – so much for each avenue, so much for each block and then that cost per person.  So… it worked out to $86 for the two of us!  I was just a trifle gobsmacked – but serves us right for not checking first – and to be honest it was so good to get home straight away, dry and warm!  I even tipped him $5 and we’re both just laughing at our own expense.  It’s just one of those things that happen on holiday and a good story to share.

So today we got up at a leisurely pace – it was still raining so there was no mad rush to get going.  First up we headed to Penn Station.  This is where we’ll be catching the train tomorrow at 10am and we had a reservation number and had to print out actual tickets at the station.  I didn’t want us to be scurrying madly round tomorrow with large suitcases in tow hence our visit today to get the tickets and suss out where we needed to go.  So glad we did – the station is huge with several different levels and catering for several different lines.  But we now know exactly where we want to go tomorrow and also where to get the taxi to drop us off.  We then decided we needed breakfast – mind you it was almost 11.30am so we had an omelette each for lunch at a nice restaurant called the Statler Grill – was nice to eat breakfast with real knives and forks rather than the plastic ones we’ve had the last couple of days.

Then we headed to Manhattan Mall – gorgeous shopping centre with a massive JC Penney – and I had a lot of fun in there – and Josh and Curtis you’ll be happy to know I found some Tshirts and stuff for you guys and was served very quickly.  Then we found a Kmart and thought we should check that out – not very exciting.  We then took off walking intending to go to the Sony Wonder Lab – we got ourselves on Madison Avenue and started walking – we started around no. 170 and needed to get to 500 – after about four blocks we were still only at 240 but we were only two blocks away from our hotel.  A quick discussion – it was still raining, feet were starting to ache as we’d covered a fair area this morning – and we opted to head back to the hotel.  So I’ve been sorting all our packing out since we need to be up and at it early tomorrow morning.  Porter is having a few zzzzs on the bed beside me as I write this.  Our plan is to go and have a late lunch/early tea around 4pm then back and get changed and head off to see Jersey Boys tonight.  I can say with some certainty that we won’t be coming home on a bike!!!

Sorry not many photos today – when it’s raining things don’t look nearly so photographic.  But new opportunities await as we head for Washington tomorrow.
Back soon
Love Anni xx
