You can always go - Downtown!!! And we did today. (for those of you too young to remember - this first line is a quote from a Petula Clark song when I was just a girl which was called 'Downtown"

But first last night - the hotel gave us a list of suggested restaurants in the locality.  We opted for a Thai place called Lemon Grass Grill and what a delicious meal we had  - and really quite reasonable - two mains and a bottle of wine for $60 including service charge and tip.  And this was about a five minute walk from the hotel.  Came back to the hotel - had a coffee and fell into bed and slept very soundly ...... for two hours!  Then we were both wide awake - damn.  Took us about another two or three hours before we managed to fall asleep.  Wakened at 9am - sooo wanted to go back to sleep but dragged myself up and got going and persuaded Craigie Babes to do the same.

So today we had breakfast at a little deli on East 34th Street called Austins - Cheese Omelette for me and Bacon, Eggs, (Sunny side up) home fries and toast for Craig.  Then we headed for the Empire State building where we joined the downtown tour with Gray Line. We passed by the Flat Iron building - it does so much look like an iron!  We had a dreadful tour guide this morning was almost impossible to make out a word he said so I'm not sure what half the stuff we saw was!   However we did go through the Union Square shopping district and then through Greenwich Village and then ended up down by Battery Park - the tip of Manhattan Island.  We got off there as we had tickets to go on the ferry across to Liberty Island and Ellis Island which of course afforded us magnificent views of that beautiful lady - the Statue of Liberty. It was quite an overcast day which wasn't actually such a bad thing as we had to stand in a queue for the ferry for about an hour and then we were on the top deck of the ferry which gave us the best view but which could have been very warm in the sun.  After we got back to Battery park we wandered up and saw the bull on Wall Street and then a bit further to the New York Stock Exchange.  We then had a look at the huge hole which was the World Trade Centre - such a sobering visit - can't begin to imagine how dreadful that must have been.  We then headed back and had one of those magnificent Ben and Gerry Cherry Garcia icecreams - last time I had one was when we were in San Francisco 4 years ago!

So back on the bus - another loopy tour guide - geez we encountered a few today!  Anyway onwards through South Street Seaport and then through Chinatown and Little Italy and to East Village and through to the United Nations building, onwards to the Rockefeller Centre and and back around to Central Park West - caught a glimpse of the Magnolia Bakery - took a picture specially for you Tiff!  Next stop Times Square - so difficult to capture the vibrancy of this place in a picture.  Another change of tour guide - even wackier!  So now around Madison Square Gardens - didn't actually look anything like a garden! and then to Macey's  We toyed with the idea of getting out here but it was by this time almost 5pm - and we hadn't had a beer all day - unheard of when we're on holiday!  So we continued on to the Empire State Building again and got off there and walked back to the hotel.   We're now in the Lobby - with the free internet - sipping on a couple of Heinekins.  I've downloaded most of the photos - apart from a few on my Iphone - so I'll choose a selection for here.  Adding titles is a bit painful which is why yesterday's entry just had a generic New York title.  But I might try and edit a few.

Thanks everyone for the comments and positive feedback.  Josh - I'm glad you're enjoying it so much xx  I'm off now to sort out some photos for this entry, then it will be time to get tarted up a bit and head out for dinner.  So far this trip we've just been having 2 meals a day - which means that by now I'm bloody hungry!!

Back soon
Love Anni xx

When you're alone and life is making you lonely
You can always go - downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
Seems to help, I know - downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
How can you lose?

Glad to see you are both having a great time...xxx
