in a nutshell: we left Mumbai early yesterday and got to Hong Kong late in the afternoon (hitting the HK metro right at rush-hour on a Friday evening, good timing!). We got our Octopus cards and managed to get ourselves to Nathan Road in Kowloon. The Salvation Army place was full so we're in a hotel quite close by. We met up with Anne's friend Amanda and her husband in the evening in Soho and had a really good time catching up with them and getting used to how different HK is from India!

We join our China tour group tomorrow and leave HK on Monday morning.

-------------------------

We spent our first full day in Hong Kong getting up very late (jet-lag, obviously!) and then walking around some of HK 01 - First taste of Hong Kong
01 - First taste of Hong Kong
. We walked down Nathan Road from our hotel to the Star Ferry terminal where we crossed over to Central. The Lonely Planet had a walking tour of Central that we did which took us to Hong Kong Park - an amazing place full of wedding parties there for the photographs! Seriously, there were about 10 brides drifting around! There was a fantastic (and free!) walk-through aivary housing 800 birds so Anne was VERY happy with that!

The weather is warm but fairly cloudy. As we are going to be back here for a week after the tour of China we decided that the Peak and things like that could wait, and hopefully the weather might be a bit clearer on our second visit.

We have enjoyed the peace of being able to browse the shops and market stalls in HK with virtually no hassle.... that is until we were accosted near the Star Ferry terminal area by people offering tailor-made clothes. Of course, the only people doing any hassling in HK are Indian! This made us laugh and reminded us of what we'd left!

We have dived in and gone to a couple of noodle-houses on Nathan Road - the ones that provided the menus in English! Maybe when we get back we'll feel brave enough to try pot-luck at some of these places!

We have met most of the people who we'll be travelling through China with - they are ALL Australian! We are the only non-Aussies in the group, and there are only 2 other blokes apart from Jono! But everyone seems very nice so far so we hope it will be a happy tour!

We leave very early tomorrow morning on a ferry out of Victoria Harbour to Guangzhou, then we'll be getting the sleeper train to Guilin...
