From City of Angels to City of Sin

After some great days in Los Angeles we headed for Las Vegas, Nevada to get some new and different impulses. We picked up a rental car at Los Angeles Airport on the morning of November 30th - a brand new Ford Focus 2007-model at a very decent price. Now for the scary part: the Los Angles traffic. But as with everything else you get used to that as well and, in spite of eight lane freeways and heavy traffic, we got through this challenge safe an sound. The drive from LA to Las Vegas is about 4 hours and 30 minutes, if you drive at an average of 130 km per hour...
Upon arrival in Nevada we were greeted by several small "casino-cities" immediately across the state boarder. But this was only a teaser compared to what awaited us in Las Vegas. "Sin City" is exactly what the myth claims: hundreds of blocks of casinos with slot machines, black jacks, roulettes, poker, and entertainment in general. All casinos/hotels are designed to follow a certain theme and most are really well designed. During our two days we visited Luxor (Egypt), Venetian (Venice/Venezia), New York, New York (well..New York...), Excalibur (King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table), Caesars Palace (Roman Empire), Paris (Paris and everything French), Monte Carlo (fancy-schmancy), and Bellagio (well-known from the movie Oceans 11) - just to mention a few! We stayed at the Excalibur and had a great time there. The hotel has more than 4000 rooms and is clearly HUGE. Gambling, restaurants, shopping, spa, pool, and a full floor containing a fair with everything the kids can dream of.
Our room had a view of The Strip, Las Vegas' main street.
Las Vegas is truly overwhelming. We had great fun watching the cowboys and cowgirls visiting from many parts of the US, having dressed up in their best denim shirt, hat, and cowboy boots. All sorts of people from all social levels come to Vegas for the gambling, the entertainment, the endless buffets, and the fun. When it comes to gambling we could cash out the amazing accumulated amount of $7.51. We probably spent somewhat more than this amount, although no crazy gambling on our part. We had more than enough with watching other people betting their life savings and what have you, while a lucky few actually won and had reason to celebrate. However, as we all know, in the end the house always wins. Viva Las Vegas.
Next on our itinerary is Honolulu, and some relaxing days in the sun. Aloha!
