Entry 9 of 18 | show all | print this entry

I can't believe we have reached the end of Route 66 already. We have not been able to get to a Pc till now so sorry that there has been no updates. Weather has been from Storms, floods and high winds to intense dry heat till today when we hit the lovely sea breeze, towns have been big cities to tiny towns and ghost towns, food has always been interesting.... mostly over Mexican now but we have tried it all including Navaho, best meal ever was at the Spudder in Tulsa, tell you about that later
Ok, back again, this time in SF in Los Altos where we have the last three days and the big birthday today. The hardest thing has been to get to update the blog as there has never been a PC or we have been so late getting in, we just crashed into bed.  Back to the trip. At Flagstaff with our very bright pink Debbie Reynolds room and the trains going all night with full horns!!!! we went up to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon...as always, absolutely magnificent, its just so hard to comprehend just how big it all is... on to Bedrock with Fred Flinstone and to Williams where Jo, Paul and Anneliese came down with a terrrible bug and P & J were bedridden for the next day, luckily we were staying there. Went to the best named restaurant.."Pancho McGillicuddys" How's that for a western town!!!! On day off those riding went to Sedona and A & I met them in Jerome, the steepest town in USA, so like Sintra in Portugal, loads of art gallerys etc, tiny steep streets with loads of character.
Then it was off to Las Vegas via Seligman which is known as the father of Route 66...best saying, "Cattle crossing means go slow, that ole bull is some cow's beau"!! Scenery really changed to great open smooth valleys with no livestock at all till we climbed up to the Hoover dam...loads of work going on there, its huge but the waster level was really low. You have to go through a very strict check point and we thought the truck would be a worry but we smiled our best NZ one and away we went. Starting to get the cactus now, short red ones and tall ones but not like the ones in the movies. Rode right across the Hoover dam, Anneliese rode all day today, no helmets or jackets till we reached Kingman, then new law.
