Once we got back to Luang Nam Tha after our trek, Simon, Mel, Katie and I decided to rent motorbikes (well, 110cc scooters) for the day.  I was predictably wobbly at first but soon got the hang of it.  After a couple of near misses Mel decided mountain biking would be more up her street and went to trade in her scooter for something a bit more controllable.
Simon, Katie and I first drove out to a hilltop temple near the airfield, and then took a beautiful scenic route (well, I think every route to anywhere in Laos is scenic) down to the river, where we found a nice quiet riverside restaurant to stop at for a lemon and mint smoothie.  Simon headed back after that, leaving Katie and I to carry on exploring.  We went back through town and through a few villages to get to a small but very pretty waterfall where we rested for a while.  On the way back we stopped numerous times to admire the sunset(My sunset pictures got deleted - nooo!!!.)  I am well and truly hooked on the whole scooter-rental thing, and I hope I get more opportunities to do this during the rest of my trip.  It seems like a very popular thing to do throughout South-East Asia, but at the moment I only really feel comfortable driving in very quiet places without too much traffic.
In the evening we bought a few bottles of red wine and took a sawngthaew back to the riverside restaurant we had discovered earlier in the day.  It was our last evening together as Mel and Simon are flying to Vientiane tomorrow.  I'll be sad to say goodbye to them but I'm sure I'll see them again, and I'm happy to be travelling on to Luang Prabang with Katie.

November 16th - those sunset pictures just turned up on a disc I never even knew I had :-)

Great Title
Love that film, must buy it sometime. Scooters sound fun, though have a feeling I would end up on a mountain bike..... x
