Saturday was a relatively easy day, after the long day and long drive yesterday. Rick & I visited Orewa, Whangaparaoa, Gulf Harbour, Shakespear Park and Albany.
At Shakespear Park, I finally got a the closest I've ever gotten to one of these darn pukekos, and facing the right direction. They're usually high-tailing it out of camera range, and I usually just get a photo of a white butt.

I call them 'blue chickens' - not because they are fearful, but because the way they run around like a chicken. I don't know that I've ever seen one in flight.
Another bird that is hard to get close enough to to photograph is the tui.
On Sunday after church, we went for a drive around the hills to Hunua Falls, and around Papakura and the Bombay Hills.

tui - another famous NZ bird
You'll notice that it has white plumage on its front - yes, that's part of the bird http://nzbirds.com/birds/tui.html - there's even a .wav file of their song on this site. I was pleased to get the photos I did get, because they don't sit still either. On Sunday after church, we went for a drive around the hills to Hunua Falls, and around Papakura and the Bombay Hills.
