Is this Day 3 or 4? We arrived on Thursday and today is Sunday so I suppose this is technically Day 4 even though Day 1 was abbreviated at best!
We are still at the Bristol Hotel -- kind of hard to get sick of luxurious accomodations! Last night we walked up the street for dinner at Restaurante Tinajas where we had an OK dinner but enjoyed a true Panamanian dance exhibition. The audience was peppered with tourists and Panamanians both and was a thoroughly fun evening. This morning, Sunday, we woke up to -- what is that? -- sunshine?? Egads!! What to do on a day that we didn't have to dodge the rain! We had a leisurely breakfast in the hotel dining room and jumped into a cab to take us to the tip of the Amador Causeway -- an area that had once been populated by the American troops that inhabited Panama City. The end of the road is at a marina where cruise ships dock. After finding ourselves surrounded by pasty white over-weight Americans, we swore to each other that we wouldn't find ourselves in the cruise group anytime soon.
With a bottle of water in hand, we started the scenic walk back towards the city. Anyone familiar with the area will get an idea of how far we walked when we say that we went from the end of the Amador peninsula to Country Inn and Suites -- 3 miles? 4? It was warm and we were a bit sticky but it felt so good to be outdoors that neither of us complained. Once finding ourselves on the edge of what seemed to be the safe walking areas, we grabbed a cab at the Country Inn and Suites to make it back to our hotel. After re-checking the restaurant recommendations given to us by our Americans-in-Panama on-line buddies, we headed out on foot to Bistro 10 in the Deville Hotel for lunch. That turned out to be a little slice of heaven! We were the only ones in the restaurant and were treated like a king and queen. We had two appetizers -- black sesame seed coated scallops in a cauliflower emulsion (melt in your mouth) and a puff pastry wrapped goodie with mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers and proscuito topped with a gently grilled lettuce salad -- ohmi -- excellent. We then shared a single entree of veal in an asparagus reduction topped with porcini mushroom risotto. Of course -- had to accompany that with several glasses of Sauvignon Blanc and then happily sauntered back to the hotel. Dan is now napping and I'm about to sit down with my book again.
We haven't decided about dinner (still full from lunch!) but do know that tomorrow we have a "planned" day of meeting up with Anne Gordon de Barrigon who will be picking us up at 8:30 in the morning for our tour of the Embera Village. Surely, there will be more to follow. Thanks for coming along . . . !! Ann and Dan More thumbnails ...
