Quick update and some photos from the Tuesday and Wednesday...Thursday will be its own entry. Today I'm spending a few hours making travel plans for the next couple of weeks. You could spend a lot of time in Sydney, but there's a lot of other stuff to see and I really want to get out a bit more.
Tuesday...woke up and went for a run. Sydney, especially where I'm staying in Kings Cross is pretty hilly, so my legs got quite a work out. I decided to make my way to Bondi (pronounced Bond-EYE) Beach, probably THE most touristy beaches in Sydney. I thought I could walk there and then realized I was looking at two different maps which weren't connected. OOPS! No worries. Several people saw me with my book and helped me out. I hopped on the CityRail, Sydney's train system. The cars are bigger and have two levels, but have some fun similarities to the Tube in London (ah, they remind you to MIND THE GAP - love it!). I went two stops to Bondi Junction and wanted to wander around and make my way for the beach by foot. My wandering got me a little lost, which was fine, as it was a nice day, and I finally got there. I often prefer walking, even if it takes a little longer.
Walked down this hill and saw lots of bare footed surfers going down to the beach. It started to get a little cloudy by then...Laid around on the beach, reading my book, enjoying the sound of the waves and watching the surf come in. I've never been much of a lay around the beach type of person, but I was so at peace, I cannot even begin to tell you how great I felt.
That night, I went to a "Bottle Shop" with four girls from my room, Emma and Gaelle from France and Anne and Simone from Denmark. We picked up a box, yes a box of wine (I didn't think the French approved of boxed wine, but I guess no one had a bottle opener...?). We sat around talking, listening to the Killers. I really enjoyed myself. Then around 9:30, we went with a group from the hostel to a place called World Bar, around on Darlinghurst in Kings Cross. Interesting conversation, loud club music, really BAD karaoke. We all talked about traveling, language, politics -- I'm very impressed how much people here know about US politics and have opinions about our candidates. I mentioned that I wanted to get out of Washington because so many people there think it's the center of the universe. One guy remarked that it is. That made me sad...But again, the American influence is everywhere. All of these girls watch WAY more American TV than I do. You just see things everywhere. It's nuts! In the bar, there was this wall of faces from tv and Dr. Phil was featured. One of the girls from Denmark LOVE LOVE LOVES Dr. Phil, so we took her photo. It was funny...

It started to rain, so I got up and walked around. I cleared up, I headed back for the beach and finished my book. Not terribly exciting, but at the same time, it was just where I wanted to be...it was great!
