The city is very diverse. Rich, poor, modern, old, cosmopolitan... People are mixed, black, white, western, asian...There are those little chinese supermarkets at every corner as I know them from Asia. To eat there is everything too, street food, american fast food chains, international restaurants etc. I tried to profit from all a bit depending on mood and energy. E.g. transport: there are the old local busses called 'diablos rojos' (red devils), I haven't seen any in red, usually they are painted in various colours as the 'chicken busses' which are known from whole Central America. You wave them down to pick you up and just pay 25 cents when you exit again. Then there are modern metro busses with AC, for which you need a charged card to enter. And there are many yellow taxis, seems to me every third car is a taxi, they honk at you and even pick you up if they already have passengers. Btw, all this I found out 'learning by doing' with the help of locals who are furtunately very helpful also to show me the way, because my travel guide is very poor with any information. Guess that's the problem if it covers many countries in one book.
I know now that my Spanish is good enough to survive, but I'm thinking about taking some lessons to really get into it again.
