I had just spent half an hour typing up an entry to put on this site and then there was a power cut!!! - they seem to be a very regular part of life in Southern India, so lets hope I can get this done before the next one happens!!
I had a great time (once the tummy had settled!! J ) in Kolkata. A few highlight were going to the Sunderband Islands, (we didn't see any tigers but it was a stunning place to be!) visiting Brother Gaston (- the most amazing and inspirational gentleman I have ever met who runs a home for mentally and or physically disabled people) and spending 2 days at Udayan which was so much fun! On our last evening they put on a performance for us which was brilliant, we then had to follow which was...probably not so brilliant but good fun! We then had an amazing meal on the rooftop which they had decorated with fairy lights! I don't have my camera lead with me at the moment so can't upload any pictures unfortunately!
On Thursday morning (after an emotional goodbye to the group on Wednesday evening!) I got a flight from Kolkata to Chennai where I was met by Ravi, a member of staff from Projects Abroad. We then caught a train at 9pm from Chennai which arrived in Sivakasi at 7am on Friday...which I've just realized was yesterday!?! Seems about a week ago!!! In the evening we left the Projects Abroad office and traveled about 2 hours in the car to my placement. On the way we stopped off to meet 6 volunteers who are doing conservation project about 30 mins from my accommodation. They are all really nice and I have spent the day with them today in a town called Tenkasi (about 1 hour from where I am staying).
The family I am staying with are lovely. It is a typical Indian household with Mr & Mrs Gomathinayagm (I am still working on the pronunciation!!) their two sons and daughter in-laws and 3 children. I have a room upstairs with a shower and the toilet (Indian style! - Ames and Em, you'd love it!!) is downstairs. Another medical volunteer is arriving sometime next week who I will share the room with so that'll be nice to have some company.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to go to an Indian wedding with the conservation volunteers which would be really cool. However, today my stomach has been...lets say, not so keen on the southern Indian food...so we shall see!!! We tried to go and see a film this afternoon, after having been assured it was the right film a dozen times it wasn't! - very typical of India, you ask for one thing and get the complete opposite!! None of us fancied sitting through the film that was on so we made a quick exit! I start work at the hospital on Monday which I'm really looking forward to so will update you all on how that goes and also put some pictures up later in the week!
I hope you're all well,
Lots of love xxxx
P.S My hotmail isn't working at the moment so I unfortunately can't read / send any e-mails sent but will hopefully do that later in the week!
