We decided to go to Don Det not because it's a beautiful must-see island on the Makong River in Laos but because when we booked tickets to Laos we hadn’t got our Laos guide book so didn’t know where we were going – we had a choice of Pakse, Don Det and Don Khon and basically just pulled a name out of a hat! Luckily, we picked the best place… Don Det (and Don Khon) can be found at Si Phan Don which means four thousand islands and it’s a beautiful set of islands where the atmosphere is so chilled out it’s scary! We rocked up and felt like we’d entered another dimension… No pushy tuk tuk or moto drivers trying to "help you"… No beggars… No fruit/drink sellers… No nothing. We walked along the main street (Sunset Boulevard) with absolutely no-one hassling us! It’s a teeny place with loads packed in (mainly restaurants and guesthouses). We checked in to Mr Mo’s based purely on the name with a room overlooking a farmyard. There was a sign up in our room “power on 6pm to 10.30pm” so we quickly got an idea of what this place would be like!

We went for lunch and found a lovely looking river-side restaurant. The only person there was one lady who took our order then cooked our food for us. It took about an hour to get the food but it was great when it finally made an appearance. At one point, I’d walked past the kitchen and saw her scraping out a coconut for Drew’s curry. We’re getting proper fresh food here!

We hired bikes and went exploring. The road was quite rocky in places but generally ok and we had a lovely cycle round Don Det and onto Don Khon where we saw an old abandoned train. We kept going until we found the “big waterfall” (as the tours describe it). It’s not big, it’s huge! It’s not particularly high but the sheer quantity of water is breathtaking.

We returned our bikes and went to Little Eden for some sunset beers. Ahhhh… Heaven.

Glad you enjoyed my hotel - we're very environmentally concious at Mr Mo's hence the power restrictions. Come back anytime you like!
