Northland Road Trip

This was a very relaxed trip through Northland (north of Auckland) with Anna´s mum, Julie. Starting at Auckland, we drove up the West Coast to Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island and returned down the East Coast via the scenic and famous Bay of Islands.
Our accomodation ranged from the three of us sharing cheap and cheerful caravans at camping grounds (relics of the ´70s) to humble cabins, to full-on luxury units at camping grounds - strangely enough for the same price. The wine flowed, the oysters were plentiful (and cheap!) and Ed actually ate his fill (around 3 dozen) for once. Lots of farm stalls and orchards around for the freshest produce available. Highlights included: beautiful sunsets at secluded beaches and the odd sunrise, giant NZ Kauri trees, spectacular Cape Reinga at the end of the country, quirky little towns in the middle of nowhere, Tauranga Bay, Bay of Islands, Ngawha Hot Springs (just magic!) and again Ed says oysters.
Julie also found her mountain legs in Northland after we dragged her on several walks, initially a shock for her after the flat ground of her hometown, Winton. A gorgeous part of NZ if you take the time to wind down, relax and taste the oysters! (and the wine...) Onwards to Auckland where Julie starts her next road trip south and we fly off to LA via another night with our accomodating host, Tim, in stylish Parnell. More thumbnails ...
