Having left Loja earlier in the day, we felt we deserved our dinner and a respectable glass of red wine following a windy and slow five-hour journey.

Cuenca is a famous touristy town on every travellerīs itinerary, primarily for its colonial architecture and central location. We find it charming, relaxed and friendly enough. The architecture is beautiful and includes wooden balconies and lattice work on the white plastered buildlings.

Itīs another rest place for us, and it feels like a safe, ordered place to do it.

So far, we find the people in Ecuador friendly and helpful, but not demonstratively open and chatty like most Peruvians we encountered. Itīs a much smaller country, with a fairly heavy tourist load - so perhaps they are a bit jaded?

Now is the low tourist season, so weīre pleased to only spot 6 or so other tourists during our time here.
