We would have been even shorter on cash if we hadn´t accidently caught the bus from Santa Rosa de Copan in Honduras to the WRONG BORDER!. ´How can you be so stupid, I hear you ask?´
Well, the road from Santa Rosa de Copan goes in a direct link south to the border crossing with El Salvador, so when we asked for our ticket to ´la frontera´ we naively assumed that was the one. Much to our surprise, the bus took us to a town very near this border then did almost a complete U-turn and headed off to the nearby Guatemalan border
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as we could change some of our Guatemalan currency to Honduran and slightly ease our precarious financial state.
The border crossing was a breeze, the Salvadoranean officials very charming and the bus short bus ride from the border to La Palma was stunning as the road wound around mountains, very green and covered in the afternoon sunlight.
We sampled the local fast food in La Palma - pupusas, tortillas made of rice or corn flour and filled with either beans and cheese or pork scratching type things. A grand total of 70 cents for dinner. Shopped around and found a room for $10 with a really friendly guy who insisted on showing us photos of other tourists having a great time at his house during the last few years.
Really bad news for us, the only cash machine in La Palma rejected our cash card too - so we now had no choice but to leave early the next morning for the capital - San Salvador - a place known as one of the dodgiest in Central America...
