We arrived in Guatemala City at 8.30pm. So much for booking a hotel and transfer for the night ' it didnīt happen, so we had the pleasure of haggling with local taxi drivers to get to our home for the night. Apparently it is pretty common for hotels to promise pick'ups and not come through with the goods. A friend of ours had the same experience and was rescued by some Guatemalan nuns for the night (unfortunately for him, there was no spanking involved for Monty Python fans!).

First impressions of Guatemala was that it is a strange mixture of old and new. People wearing traditional indigenous dress, yet talking on cellphones - lots of private security guards and soldiers with guns everywhere. Didnīt look as third-worldy as we expected, yet the pollution is pretty bad because there are some stinky old vehicles on the road. People are nice and friendly, and we feel very tall and very pale!
