Golly gosh what a day well well well.

At first this was ging to be the day
for having a few children round to ur house for doing stuFF. e.g.
playing with musical instruments, cardboard boxes, goat skin, candles
+ matches, magnifying glass, pocket microscope, penknives, wood
gouging tools, white paper, torches, stethoscope, printer, flame
thrower, acid bottles, razor blades, roller skates, petrol etc etc
but we found they cpould not come so we build environment anyway
which fun.

Cos they coud not come then we decide
let's go snorkling and let's see kecak. I told you bout kecak before
so you shud be constrating and renember what this is but in case you
did not cnstrate then I shall tell you. It is a old traditional
Balinese thing what been adapted so not last so long cos us
westerners what visit Bali cant do all night long or day. It has lots
of men who do the instruments with they voices going chek chek chek
except it is interlocking not all go chek chek that fast cos would
run out 0f breath. Some just go chek then wait and then go chek again
and anothe might go chek chek then wait and go chek later. and some
mmight wait a bit then go chek. Anyway it all make very fast chek
chek. And then someone dont know who go ee! very loud and they all
change to cho cho. Then someone another person go ea! (this bit like
big gecko) nd they change to different thing. Anyway the upshot is
that they do voices al the way through for one hour and be the band
but also the performance and also dancers appear and a bird like
barong dance and big fat an like barong dance and clown like barong
dance and monkey. And there is fire which eventually of course get
bigger and get kicked around the whole place by monkey even on
audience but they dont care cos they know people can be trusted to
put it out easily.
Anyway this all happen at sunset by sea
on top all very big cliff all very amazing and cultural.
I tell you more in aminute.

So we decide this and call Wayan Sumata
our driver from volcano trip. He say yes and come at 2pm and off we

Snorkel place is big place for all sea
entertaining sport stuff like going on a big pumpy up banana or
doughnut very fast pulled behind speedboat why you would like t do
this I do not know. Or worse still get on pumpy up lilo-looking thing
nd get pulled along very fast by speedboat which make lilo go
shooting up in air with you clinging on and then come back down and
bump on waves not nice. It look sshocking. Or go up under parachute
looking thing or go on motorbike on waves. All look higly suspiscious
and life-threatening.

So after shock of expensiveness of it
and getting not persuaded to do snorkkling, 'turtle' island and
glassboat by saying snorkling and getting price to less by getting
out our notebook where we has writ down evryting we has spent and
doing sums in front of selling man we agree the price and immediately
get flippers and snorkel mask after signing paper saying if we die it
not their fault.
The mask uncomfortable it press on
bridge of nose but we too excited to bother with al that and get led
to boat where we walk through water a bit t get on. It and father and
son outfit with boat who are from Java and point out islands in
distance which have good coral and good snorkling and good fishing
We reach bit of sea where boat stops
and we put on masks and flippers and I ask son to take photo. He
We tip over side and do snorking which
is grand as we see lots of fish all different colours and very bright
some neon blue and we are amazed. But we both notice coral is not
healthy mostly dead or dying no plant life and hradly any creatures
except fish which are very loverley but it not ecosystem like we
expect and also plastic and rubbish in water never mind tho ay it
still exciting and an adventure as my mum always say!

We realise why they get us to sign
paper when boats start arriving at where we are and we must be
careful (hati-hati = be careful in Balinese) for ourselfs as no-one
else will we must look out for boats case they squash us without
seeing us. It ok tho cos we hati-hati.

Matt change mask and feel better cos it
letting water up his nose. Mine press on nosebridge bad but put up
with it cos so impressed by fish and also want to use time cos paid.

Very nice then we go back cos need to
be in time for kecak which I told you some about jus now but another
thing what I tell you is the kecak is next to a temple and you must
put on sarong thing again which you must pay for even if you already
have one. Then in the temple tho are macak monkeys. We have tip
already from Wayan who say dont have sunglasses on or bracelet or
bottle or anything loose cos monkeys take it. This fun cos other
people not told get glasses case taken and sunglasses. Macak take
German lady glasses case and she try and take it back macak show
tooths and threaten to bite then eat glasses case.

This like monkeys at Midland safari
Park who specialise in taking certain things off cars driving thru
their enclosure. Some do hubcaps, some do aerials, some do wing
mirrors the one (with baby) on our Ford Cortina estate do the
windscreen seal strips which very long and take all of monkey
enclosure to do by biting annd peeling with fingers and then pull out
and leave both on bonnets very fascinating and engaging but have to
send to garage to put back in...

So....time for kecak which see above
which you neeed to purchase ticket which Wayan do for us and then sit
on hard concrete raked curved seating facing sun for kecak. Very
exciting indeed I have known about kecak since 1980 when at
university and so brill to see it. Sun went down in sea while kecak
happening an all v mesmerising and thrilling.
Plus when finishing quite a few moths
I spotted o there are moths of course. But couldn stay to look for
more as eeryone being herded out of the area to their drivers and
vans. And we so tired cos realised snorkling was lots of energy

But it wud be so nce to do a evening of
moths here the moths must be amazing and there must be big ones and
you wud jus need a white sheet and a bright light. doh.

Anyway got coke and crisps (!) for way
home. I have had more coke here then ever in my life probly usualy at
home I might have as much as 1 coke a year.
Traffic appalling on way back and we
wonder if we might get stuck on way to airport on sunday...
Many mopeds with usual stuff going on
including choosing whether to put lights on or not.

Got home showered went out to get food
saw blues band came back went to bed which is where I am now.

Ant-challenge No 4 is very good but we
dont know if we gets time to do it shame.

Tomorrow hooray we get to see gamelan
makers of Bali as Andy sorted with Nikki. It 2 hour drive tho so
hopefully they will be in. We wud realy like to see them forging,
pouring the metal, tuning and stuff especially Matt want to see this.
Looks like we done lots of stuff here to do with music and hopefully
help Andy with www.drumsforschools.co.uk.
e.g. going to village school, ideas for cards, quality checking,
workers improvisation, kecak, seeing instruments being assembled,
finding out about tongue drum resonance and tuning, inventing new
instruments, inventing new ideas, and seeing gamelan makers. Also we
still will have the little workshop for kids at our house on Sunday
morning we hope.

It make my brain go strange here in
Bali cos yesterday right I cant even remember normal stuff like
oceans. We talking about different oceans we seen. Matt say to me
have you seen the Pacific. Then I try to think for a bit an then say
is that the one next to France. He look at me incredulous and say
you're bein silly arent you and point out to me the error of my ways.

Today we say to each other some people
say Pacific dont they when they mean specific yeh and some people say
Atlantic when they mean pedantic we go on. And some people say
Mediterranean when they mean something else. It go on like this. We
sit at table and eat werthers original which we keep in fridge. I
have heard Matt go to fridge and get one wihtout asking I have been
keeping count and some are missing and you can tell anyway cos the
packet is more twirled open.

Now it late so goodnight.

PS forgot to say or maybe I didn but
cant remember that we hired bodyboards n made our tummys sore ffrom
doing trying to bodyboard but was fun – that was the day before
yesterday actually...
