It's much more difflicut than I thought
this blog thing cos it hard to get on the email and it is also
tricksy usin this ittle lapto eeing as it misses ut keys all te time
– you see!
I can't be bthered to go back and
correct everything. also I am so hot and the mosquitoes keep biting
We have been quite busy doing various
things ike making a design for a code thing for Andy's instrumments
to use for teachers etc. Plus finding out how tongue drums work. Matt
has broke 2 hacksaw blades doing this. He has also been gouging wood.
Very exciting though we hhave started a
temperature chart today in farenheit AND celsius. We are charting how
ht is it whenever we remember and then later we wil make a graph
which wil be very interesting. It has been 31.3C mosty today.
Again we have been in the sea and the
waves are always a bit different from the other day we went in. E.g.
2 days ago they were very big and tumbly and we got tumbled ike i a
washing machine and got quite scared. But yesterday they were just
foamy and bubbly and only a bit scarey because they were breakng very
close to the shore yet they were quite big. And today they were quite
strong and fastand pull-ey. everytime we go in we say just for a
llittle while nd then we get addicted to staying in for te next wave
and then doing beached whale thng.
By the way rules of film number 652
'Person washed up on a beach wake up in bright morning from lying on
front cough a bit and squint eyes is then perfectly ok apart from
feeling a bit squiffy' is not true of course (like all rules of
film). We tried this but the waves coming in on the shoreline are in
fact higher than your head so if you don't lift up you will
eventually drown after about 5 waves. (We didn't go that far).
The traffic here is mad – it is
mostly scooters - but seems to work. what happen is this: everyone
just go where you want roughly driving on the left (but not always),
at crossroads just go across how you like converging altogether in a
big lump in the middle of the crossroads beeping (you must beep quite
a bit all the time – e.g. when you're just about to park, beep,
when you see someone in front of you, beep, when you are turning left
or right, beep, when you are drving on the pavement, beep, when you
are setting off, beep etc.-it is most intresting to watch cos
everyone is very calm and no-one shout or get angry or wave hand in
rude position, they just keep driving calmly – anyway other things
which happen is scooters can have as many people on themm as you want
e.g. dad driving with young child sitting in front of him holding the
handle-bars, mum on back with baby in sling, shopping in other hand,
also you can take whatever you can carry on the scooter like
bath-tub, mirror, surf-board, wardrobe etc. There is also someone
called security who waves his arms in road occasionally and blows
whistle regularly and we are not sure what happens if he does this.
Another thing is that petrol is sold in
vodka bottles in small shops everywhere. You buy one bottle and the
man fills it up for you using a handy funnel. Next to the vodka
petrol he also sell fireworks, gas, matches, sweets, clothing,
baskets, guitar, aerosols etc.
Yesterday I had a shopping experience
which takes a long time and is very frustrating. what happens is you
go into a street-side shop – these are open usuallly all day and
all night (the shopman seem to live there) – and nce you are there
the shopman jumpp on you and even if you so much as look at a dress
he wil say you want it. I asked what material and he say cotton and I
look at the label it say rayon so I say it's rayon. So he say rayon
is cotton and I say rayon is rayon and cotton is cotton. It go like
this for a bit. However I persevere and ask to try a dress on and he
show me to a back room which has all his stuff in and his half eaten
food on old plates and broken doorway. I would like this dress
please. It 130,000 million billion rupiahs. What no too much. very
good dress yes but it's too much. How much will you pay. 50. No no
this dress very good you pay more I cannot sell for that madarm. You
pay 120,000 billion million. No it's lovely but I cant pay that. You
got British pounds? You pay £20? But that's more than you asked
in the first place think I better go. Ok I give it to you for £15.
No it's too much... and it go on like this for umpteen ages...in the
end Johnny Walker (the shopman) sells to me (Mrs Anna) the dress for
£9 which is apparently way too much but I am exhausted and
think it is still a nice dress.
Tonight we cooked our own food which
was fun. we have also been cooking porridge and found good teabags
which make proper tea which is most rewarding.
Tomorrow we are going to be taken by
Wyan's brother Maman ( I think) to Ubud (I think) which is where we
might see the following things: A barong dance, a stone carving
place, a monkey wildlife place, a volcano. Wyan is the person who
hhelped pick us up from the airport. Lots of people (men and women,
girls and boys)are called Wyan which means first-born, another name
is something else which mean 2nd born. It's quite
confusing because so many people are called this name that you don't
know who they are. If you went on the beach and shouted Wyan then
many people might turn round...
Anyway it will be exciting going to a
differet place as we're getting a bit cooped up here.
We have seen today that it's -2C in
London. Oh. Actually we are jealous.
And just seen it is now -3C. And it has snoed in warwick so I am told. Oh dear.
BY the way sorry there are not more
phtos but it takes many a long time to upload them so praps I will do
the rest of them when I get back and then you can see them if you can
