We then drove back to town, got a VERY quick bite to eat, and embarked on a whale watching trip. By this time we had noticed the following interesting tidbits about Bar Harbor:
2. There were an incredible amount of Eastern European, specifically Russian speakers that were working in the town.
You can read on for the details, but the whale watching, while interesting, was probably not worth the money ($50). First of all we missed the Puffins by 3 weeks, which was a MAJOR disappointment. I might see whales in other parts of the world, but who knows when I'll have another opportunity to see a Puffin!! So the whale watching boat was a fast catamaran, so it was very windy and very chilly. When we finally got to the deep water, there was a whale, Breakers, which kept appearing. Each time there was a whale spotting 2 things would happen: 1. Everyone would rush to one area of the boat like someone had just said, "Free Diamonds" and 2. The skipper would always turn the boat away from where I had a view, thus negating ANY possibility of getting a good picture. During this I was wishing we had time to go out to Nova Scotia for a day or two. Maybe next time...
After 4 hours of the whale watching, we arrived back in port cold and slightly irritated (at least I was). Then since it was rainy, we drove out to the other side of the island to eat barbeque at a brewery. I have to say, the beer wasn't great and the food was, well, terrible. I mean, not just not good, it was bad! Then we left and found the bar that Vicki and Tom in Bingham told us to go to. That was fun, but we called an early night since it was raining CATS and DOGS.
