"In Brittany, It Only Rains on the Idiots"

Don't look at me, I didn't come up with that saying. It's a common saying in Bretagne because of it's infamous climate. Look it up on facebook if you don't believe me! It's a mass generalization that it's always rainy and terrible in Bretagne. But I personally have found that the weather is lovely. It hasn't rained since I've been here, and the majority of the time, the weather has been beautiful and sunny and warm. Quite the welcome surprise.

Not much has been going on over the last few days. I'm starting to feel guilty because I'm improving my French more rapidly than they're improving their English. Why? Because I'm speaking French 24/7. That's not fair, I know, but RARELY do I get a chance to speak French with native speakers. I want to make the most of my time here so speaking French is just what comes naturally to me now. However, I know my real purpose for being here so I'll have to buckle down and do some serious English teaching soon. Le sigh.

Anyway, on Friday I went with Cyril and Angélique to their ballroom dancing lessons in Quimper. I accept every invite for anything at this point because I love having stuff to do. So we drove 10 minutes away to Quimper and I tried my best to remember how to get there... to no avail because Cyril drives pretty crazily. We arrived at this gym and hurried inside because we were late. The gym itself would make any American laugh. It had all the charm of a gym from the 60's. In the US, we're used to everything being new and renovated and state of the art, but in France, mostly everything holds on to old traditional looks. The gym was not exempt. It was carpeted in many areas and generally pretty dark inside. We descended downstairs on a tiny spiral staircase and walked down a narrow path to find a classroom. The floors were old and wooden, the walls were painted concrete blocks with standard paintings of fitness related activities. The class had already begun but everyone stopped to greet us. The instructor was teaching salsa. His instructions were very clear, and one difference between dance classes in the US and dance classes in France are the counts. In the US, we use an 8-count (one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight, and to start an 8-count, you preface with five-six-seven-eight). In France, they use a 6-count, which I still find odd, but I'm sure the feel they same about our 8-count. We transitioned then to "rock and roll", which made me laugh because I rarely see any Americans dancing "rock and roll". It was easy enough and I learned some new steps that I'm sure I'll never actually use in the states, but nonetheless were interesting to learn. The class was actually pretty fun... I'll have to drag someone to them when I get back to the US.

On Saturday, the weather was amazing so we went to the beach in Combrit, another town about 10 minutes away. I absolutely love the beach but I've never been to a French one so I really had no idea what to expect but my, was I in for a real treat! La plage was absolutely beautiful. It stretched out for miles under an azure sky and the breeze was delicious and warm. Angélique, Liam and I found a spot and laid out our towels. I took out a book and began to read. I could have honestly finished the whole book in the soft sand while the sun warmed my body. It was lovely. Angélique and Liam went to play in the water that I knew would be far too cold to be enjoyable, so I watched them from the shore. Before I knew it, it was time to leave so I snapped a few pictures and we drove away from the beautiful place.

And today? It's Sunday. I should have gone to church but I'm still pretty jet-lagged because even though I went to bed relatively early, apparently I slept through my cellphone alarm. Quel dommage. There will be a mass in a few weeks, so I'll go then. For now, I'll watch my home church's service online... once it is actually posted online. Wondering about the disco? That's been postponed until this upcoming weekend. Fine by me, I'll have plenty of time for partying later.

I wonder how long the weather will stay this beautiful...

Still missing everyone, take care!
