We had another staggeringly early rafting call. This morning was cold! I put my full drysuit on and those who didn't have their own gear had to rent wetsuits. We signed our waivers and off we went. Mark was our TL once again and did his usual comical safety briefing on the bus.

Jamie had found plastic viking helmets at some halloween shop so we taped those to our helmets on the bus ride. When we got to the river we saw what guides were available and made a bee-line to L.J. We've had him as a guide on the New a few times before plus he's one of our friends so we knew we'd be in good hands. He saw our helmets and immediately nicknamed us "Team Crooked ad Horny", he said we were alot like river guides. He's a funny guy, plus he knows his stuff and is willing to do fun things so long as his team is up for it.

We didn't have any strangers on our raft this time, it was just us, which is a good thing since we could really carry on with LJ and we knew everyone on the raft could paddle.

This was my friend Michelle's first time on the Upper Gauley, in fact it was her first time on any whitewater bigger than the Lehigh, which is quite a jump in difficulty! She was nervous but excited.

As always the fog was sitting over the Gauley River obscuring most of the rapids up above Pillow Rock.
