What I did
The drive took about 7-8 hours from Crystal's house. Along the way we passed the Lower Yough, the Cheat, and the Gauley on the way to the New River. I wonder if the people in WV know how lucky they are to have so many awesome rivers so close to them?!
We arrived in Fayetteville at the Songer base camp about 4:30 p.m. All along the way we had blue skies and sun, which the weather report wasn't calling for. We thought it was great and wouldn't you know it as soon as we pulled in a huge thunderstorm rolled in and we had to very quickly set our tents up in the rain and lightning
I doubt we could have gotten our tents up any quciker and just like that it stopped raining when we were done! LOL!
After we got our camp set up and showered Crystal showed me around the Songer camp for a bit, then we went for a drive to the New River Bridge just by Fayette Station to check out the river.
I got some video of the river and then we headed back to camp to get some food and start drinking. We got some pizza from the new shop Songer opened up at camp and we went to the High Water Lounge to hang around for awhile.
The bar is awesome, its decorated with all broken paddles from trips and tons of pictures of rafts in the Gorge. They also show hours of rafting trips on a big screen tv.
We got in the bar about 6-6:30 and there were a few river guides we talked to and drank with. We were in the bar for quite awhile when a huge thunderstorm rolled in. It was severe rain and lightning and we got trapped in the bar til after midnight! It was insane!
Slowly other members of our group arrived. They all joined us in the bar and the shots started flowing! We were drinking tons of beer, Jagerbombs, Jameson and some unidentified blue shot Darrin bought us all. We all got pretty tore up!
At some ungodly hour we stumbled to our tents and passed out.
