Where I stayed
I arrived at the hostel at 10:30am. I knew it was probably too early to check-in, but knew they would store my bags until it was time for me to come back. However, when I got to the front desk, it turned out they had lost my reservation. And, it being Saturday night with a big festival going on in the city, the hostel was full. After having been on the bus for the previous 24hrs, and walking 20 minutes with my 20kg pack on my back, this was not funny.
So I logged on to my email to show them my confirmation email, and luckily they had a bed in their other building, the Dakota Hotel. I was not incredibly impressed, as it was about a block away and had no common areas or kitchen or anything, although they assured me I was welcome to come and use theirs
I did think it was a bit strange that there was a blanket hanging over the bed from the top bunk, but the bed wasn’t made and there was nothing on the bed, so I assumed it had fallen down from the top bunk. I moved the blanket aside, spread my things all over the bed and went to have a shower.
While I was in the shower, I heard someone come in and go back out again. I didn’t think anything of it – it is a dorm room, after all. So I got out of the shower and was hanging around reading some travel brochures, when a girl came in along with her two male friends. She was so angry – I had taken her bed! How dare I, when she had so carefully put the blanket there to reserve it. I calmly explained that I had never seen anyone reserve the bed by hanging the blanket from the top bunk, and that she should probably have made the bed or put some of her stuff on there. However, she had already decided to have a tantrum, and proceeded to stomp around the room while trying to decide which other bed would possibly be good enough for her (we were the only two that had checked in at that time so she had quite a large selection). I told her if she was going to be so dramatic about it then I would move to another bed, although I really didn’t think I should have to as it was all just so petty!
Anyway, after huffing and puffing for the rest of the afternoon, she finally apologised to me for being so rude. And so she should have.
But this was just the beginning of the drama!
Later on, four more girls checked in so the room was full. The angry bed reserver was the last to come in before me, and unfortunately was too drunk/lazy/stupid to lock the door properly. So, about 15 minutes before I came home, a very drunk GUY came into the room, stripped off and proceeded to get into bed with another Australian girl who was staying there. Imagine her horror! They all started screaming at him to get out! Get out! But he wouldn’t leave and eventually they had to go down and get the receptionist to come and get rid of him.
The night-time receptionist, a little Asian guy who speaks minimal English, came rushing up the stairs and shouted "get out, bitch!". Yeah, that’s actually what he said! Well, the guy wouldn’t get out, and it escalated to a violent struggle between the little reception guy and the drunk to get him out of the room. I have to admit, I am very disappointed not to have been there to see that! The next day, the guy got kicked out and the hostel made him come and apologise. Since the girl he tried to jump wasn’t there at the time, he left her a (barely legible) note. See picture attached of said note. My favourite part goes like this “I am an asshole. A drunk asshole”. And I also like how he wrote “ant” instead of “and”.
Luckily, the girl wasn’t too traumatised, and was able to laugh about it after getting a new set of sheets.
