We decided to go on a day trip from Hanoi and so we headed to the Perfume Pagoda. It is a mountain range in a national park that apparently smells nice because of all the flowers (hence the perfume) and one mountain looks like a pagoda (hence the pagoda). There are lots of temples dotted about which we went to see.

On arrival we got in a rowing boat for about an hour down the river to reach the area. Our rower was a little old lady but she rowed for an hour without stopping. We passed pretty rock formations, fishermen, and little huts. It was very pretty and similar to Halong Bay, except on a river. It was very relaxing listening to the water splashing as we sailed down the river. We arrived at the mountain and hiked up it in the heat, which took about an hour. It gave us lovely views over the mountains and forests. We reached the top and found the temple that we had hiked up to see was actually in a large cave, which was very cool and not what we expected at all. It was a bit dark in there so I am not sure how well my pictures will come out. Once we had done that we climbed back down again. By now we were both melting like ice lollies but we stopped off at a few little temples on the way down. At the bottom we had lunch and then went to see a little temple. It was very beautiful and full of character (unlike the restored, built last week Chinese temples) and had some lovely statues and coloured flags. I took lots of artistic photos. After this it was back on the rowing boat and the peaceful journey downstream. We took the bus back to Hanoi and then just had time to eat before catching the overnight sleeper train the Sapa...
